TUCSON, Ariz. — The Arizona Wildcats (24-14, 13-5) flair for the dramatic returned on Sunday at Hi Corbett Field in the form of a 7-6 extra-innings walk-off victory over the Washington State Cougars (18-20, 7-14).
Sunday's hero was
Mason White; the Tucson native collected his second walk-off hit of the season, a hard-hit single up the middle with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 11th inning. White also delivered the decisive blow in game three against UCLA three weeks ago.
Arizona's 11th-inning rally was sparked by first baseman
Tommy Splaine, who was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame. Catcher
Blake McDonald sacrificed Splaine to second before an intentional walk and a second hit batter loaded the bases with one out for White, setting up the walk-off heroics.
Starting pitcher
Cam Walty worked 6.0 innings for the Wildcats and limited the Cougars to just three runs on six hits while striking out six. He did not factor into the decision.
Right-handers
Dawson Netz and
Tony Pluta worked the 10th and 11th innings for Arizona, respectively. The two combined to shut out Washington State while the defense rolled two double plays behind them. Pluta (1-0) earned his first career win on the back of his scoreless inning.
