Wildcats Shut Out Golden Bears, 5-0, to Win Series

BERKELEY, Calif. — The Arizona Wildcats (16-13, 9-5) rode a spectacular start from right-hander Cam Walty to a 5-0 shutout victory over the California Golden Bears (16-12, 5-9) to secure the road series win on Saturday afternoon.

Walty was dominant for the Wildcats to earn his fifth win of the year, going 7.0 innings and allowing just six hits while striking out eight. Only three times in seven innings did Cal move runners into scoring position against Walty, only to be turned away every time.

Right fielder Emilio Corona opened the scoring for Arizona with a solo home run to lead off the top of the fourth inning, his sixth long ball of the season. It would prove to be all the offense the Wildcats would need, though the Arizona lineup would go on to plate four more runs over the remainder. RBI singles from Richie Morales and Tommy Splaine, along with a sac fly from Morales and a throwing error by the Golden Bears rounded out the scoring.

Designated hitter Xavier Esquer, making just his second career start, picked up his first two collegiate hits on Saturday against Cal.

Right-hander Dawson Netz worked the final two innings for the Wildcats, allowing just one hit while striking out three to preserve the shutout.
