TUCSON, Ariz. — Despite a flurry of second-half chances, Arizona State and Arizona played to a 0-0 draw Thursday night at Murphy Field at Mulcahy Stadium.
The Wildcats controlled play in the first half, out-shooting the Sun Devils by a 5-1 margin in the first 45 minutes. Senior
Ella Hatteberg had a great chance in the 22nd minute that was saved by the ASU keeper and
Lily Boydstun's shot three minutes later sailed just over the crossbar.
Both teams ramped up the pressure after halftime, combining for 14 shots in the second half alone. Arizona State (10-5-4, 3-5-3 Big 12) nearly broke through in the 83rd minute when Peyton Marcisz fired a shot on frame, but Arizona goalkeeper
Olivia Ramey made a crucial save to preserve the shutout. Ramey finished with two saves on the night.
Arizona (7-11-1, 2-8-1) had several dangerous chances of its own.
Leilani Cortez-Ramirez tested Sun Devils keeper Pauline Nelles twice in the final 15 minutes, including a low drive in the 76th minute that Nelles smothered. Nelles recorded four saves, including key stops on
Ella Hatteberg in the 47th and
Marissa Arnst in the 59th minute.
Arizona outshot ASU 13-7 overall and held a slight edge in possession (52%-48%), but neither side could find the back of the net. The draw marks the third tie of the season for Arizona State and the first for Arizona since early September.
