SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Arizona Wildcats (14-12, 8-8 Big 12) dropped a five-set match (25-19, 18-25, 21-25, 31-29, 6-15) to the Utah Utes on Friday night in Salt Lake City.
Arizona totaled five blocks and two aces but Utah had 11 blocks and 10 aces to outlast the Cats.
Jordan Wilson tallied a season best 29 kills and surpassed 1,500 career kills.
Carlie Cisneros notched a career high 23 kills for the offense.
The Cats won the first set 25-19. Arizona used a 6-0 run to create separation from Utah early in the set and kept the lead. Wilson led the Cats with seven kills and a .429 clip while Cisneros followed with six kills and hit .556 in the set. Arizona was able to hold Utah to a .182 hitting percentage to take the opening set.
Utah evened the match after taking the second set, 25-18. The Utes went on a 9-0 run to take the lead early on and the Cats couldn't catch up. Cisneros tallied five kills to lead the offense and four Cats had two kills each but it wasn't enough to overcome Utah's three blocks and two aces.
The Utes won the third set, 25-21, to take a 2-1 lead in the match. Wilson led the offense with seven kills and Cisneros had five kills but the Utes hit .400 and had three blocks to control the set.
Arizona forced a fifth set after winning the fourth set, 31-29. Utah went on a 5-0 run late in the set to take the lead at 23-22 but Arizona stormed back to win the set in extra points. The Cats hit .348 in the set and were led by Wilson who knocked down 12 kills and hit .333 in the fourth set. Cisneros added six kills while
Journey Tucker had three kills to help the Cats.
Utah won the match with a 15-6 win in the final set. The Utes controlled the set from the beginning and held Arizona to just three kills in the set.
Avery Scoggins and Tucker combined for one block.
Arizona returns home to host West Virginia on Wednesday, November 26 at 6 p.m. MST and Cincinnati on Friday, November 28 at 3 p.m. MST in McKale Center.
