Meurant Named Big 12 Co-Newcomer of the Week

TUCSON, Ariz. — Arizona Baseball standout third baseman Mathis Meurant has been selected as a Big 12 Co-Newcomer of the Week, the conference announced this afternoon.

Meurant officially goes down as Arizona Baseball's first ever winner of a Big 12 weekly award; he shares this week's honor with Kansas State starting pitcher Lincoln Sheffield.

Across three starts last week, all of which came at third base during the Wildcats weekend sweep of San Diego, Meurant hit .625 (5-for-8) with seven runs scored, one double, two home runs, and five RBI. His red-hot performance at the plate produced a team-leading 2.200 OPS. Meurant, the first French born and raised player in NCAA power conference history, swatted home runs in back-to-back games on Saturday and Sunday.

Meurant hit safely, scored multiple runs, and drove in at least one RBI in every game over the weekend. In addition to his performance at the plate, the third baseman played flawless defense at the hot corner with a 1.000 fielding percentage.

He opened the week with a 2-for-3, two-run performance that included a double in Arizona's series-opening run-rule win over San Diego on Friday night. Meurant followed it up with another two-hit performance on Saturday afternoon, this time swatting his first Division I home run in the fifth inning and scoring a trio of runs. He wrapped up the weekend with a 1-for-3 outing in Sunday's finale, with his one hit being a three-run home run in the second inning that landed on top of the Terry Francona Hitting Center in right field.

Meurant and the Wildcats return to action this Wednesday, Feb. 26 against Rice at Reckling Park in Houston. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. MST with a broadcast on ESPN+.
