TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona Gymnastics'
Alysen Fears was named Big 12 Gymnast of the Week and
Elena Deets earned Big 12 Specialist of the Week following their strong performances against No. 17 Denver, adding to the season high team score of 196.775. The awards were announced by the conference on Tuesday.
Fears is the second gymnast this season to earn Gymnast of the Week following
Emily Mueller, who secured the award last week. Deets earned Big 12 Specialist of the Week for the second time this season.
Fears set an all-around season high of 39.450 and placed first in the all-around. She anchored two rotations, vault and bars, where she led the rotation on vault with a 9.80 and set a season high on bars of 9.925. In the last two rotations of the night, Fears scored a season high on beam of 9.825 and tied her career high of 9.90 on floor. The senior from Murrieta, California tied for first on bars and floor.
The fifth year senior, Deets, set a career high on bars of 9.925 and a season high on beam of 9.925. On Friday, Deets placed first on beam and tied for first on bars. Her first 9.925 of the night helped Arizona earn a 49.425 on bars. Deets' season high bar routine of 9.925 pushed the GymCats to the lead and score a 49.30 on the event.
In addition, both Fears and Deets helped Arizona set season high team scores on beam and bars to tie the third highest bar score in program history.
Fears, Deets, and the GymCats are set to travel to Utah on Friday, February 7 to face the No. 4 Utes at 7:00 p.m. MST.
