TUCSON, Ariz. - Arizona's
Jay Friend was awarded his third Big 12 Men's Tennis Player of the Week honors of the season, it was announced Tuesday afternoon.
The junior captain received the honors after going 3-0 in ranked match ups this past weekend. After rising to No. 8 in the ITA National Singles poll last week, Friend first gave up only two games to defeat Texas Christian's No. 20 Lui Maxted 6-0, 6-2.
On Sunday, Friend won both his doubles and singles matches against No. 17 Baylor. In doubles, No. 33 Friend and doubles partner
Eric Padgham battled No. 80 Devin Badenhorst and Luc Koenig to a 7-6(4) tie-break win, securing the doubles point for the Cats. Friend went on to finish third in singles play, winning 6-3, 6-4 over No. 101 Oskar Brostrom Poulsen set Arizona up for a clinching point at 3-1.
Friend currently stands at 26-4 on the season, and 15-1 in dual match singles play. In doubles, he is 12-1 alongside Padgham.
