Arizona Faces Grand Canyon in Phoenix

| By:
TUCSON, Ariz. — The Arizona Wildcats (20-7, 6-3 Big 12) face a familiar in-state foe on Tuesday night in Phoenix as a midweek matchup against the Grand Canyon Antelopes (17-10, 5-1 WAC) awaits at GCU Ballpark.

Tuesday's game will be available to subscribers on ESPN+ and broadcast live on Wildcats Radio 1290 AM with play-by-play from both Brian Jeffries and Brody Dryden.

This will be the first of three midweek meetings between the Cats and Lopes, a continuation of a 100-game series that dates back to 1967.

Arizona dropped their most recent weekend series to Baylor but earned a win in the series finale on Sunday following a 10-run first inning outburst. Grand Canyon is riding a three-game win streak following a sweep of Seattle U at home over the weekend.

More information on Tuesday's game can be found below.

Leading Off...

  • The Arizona Wildcats head north for a midweek matchup against the Grand Canyon Antelopes on Tuesday night.
  • Tuesday's game will be broadcast on ESPN+ with Michael Potter and Tim Wilhelm on the call.
  • This is the first of three midweek games between the two schools this season. Arizona and Grand Canyon have faced off 100 times previously, with games dating back to 1967 and the Wildcats holding a 70-30 (.700) edge in the all-time series.
  • Their last meeting was at the 2024 NCAA Tucson Regional at Hi Corbett Field, a game that GCU won 9-4. The Antelopes won 3-of-4 games against the Wildcats last season.
  • Last week brought us Opening Day in Major League Baseball, and Arizona Baseball was proudly represented by six players on Opening Day rosters: Kevin Ginkel (ARI), Tylor Megill (NYM), Andrew Nardi (MIA), Kevin Newman (LAA), Rob Refsnyder (BOS), and Austin Wells (NYY). Former Wildcat Terry Francona is also back in MLB, now as the manager of the Cincinnati Reds.
  • Arizona's six players on MLB Opening Day rosters is the second most among all Big 12 programs.
  • The Wildcats currently lead all Division I programs with 17 triples, five of which have been hit by the middle infield duo of Mason White (2) and Garen Caulfield (3).
  • Mason White currently ranks tied for sixth in program history with 34 career home runs. He is tied with David Shermet (1985-88) and sits just one home run shy of a tie for fifth. Of his 34 career home runs, 26 have been hit away from Hi Corbett Field at road/neutral venues.
