TUCSON, Ariz. — The Arizona Wildcats (22-10, 8-5) dropped their series opener to the Oklahoma State Cowboys (16-15, 5-6) on an extra-innings final score of 4-2.
Starting pitcher
Collin McKinney turned in his best performance as a Wildcat, limiting the Cowboys to just two unearned run on seven hits across 5.2 innings of work. The right-hander struck out a season-high eight batters and issued only one walk. McKinney worked his way into just a trio of three-ball counts all night and finished with 73 strikes on 103 pitches. He did not factor into the decision.
Facing a 2-1 deficit in the bottom of the ninth, center fielder
Aaron Walton delivered with his third hit of the night, a solo home run out to right-center field. His sixth long ball of the season even the game at 2-2 and sent the Wildcats and Cowboys to extra innings.
Walton collected all three of Arizona's hits on Friday night; he opened the night with a one-out single in the first, doubled down the left field line in the fourth, and swatted his solo home run in the ninth.
Reliever
Casey Hintz (6-2) took the loss after allowing a pair of runs in the top of the 10th inning. Prior to that, Hintz had worked 3.1 scoreless innings in relief of McKinney.
Right-handerÂ
Garrett Hicks cleaned up the top of the 10th inning with a strikeout and a fly out.
