PROVO, Utah — The Arizona Wildcats (28-11, 12-6) picked up a rubber match victory and secured a series win with a 7-5 decision over the BYU Cougars (19-18, 6-12) on Saturday afternoon at Miller Park.
Mason White's second home run of the series, a solo shot into the trees beyond the right field fence, broke a 5-5 tie in the top of the 7th and the Wildcats never looked back. First baseman
Tommy Splaine followed later in the frame with an RBI single to pick up an insurance run and create the final margin of 7-5.
The Wildcats bullpen was stellar once again, and was highlighted by performances from
Hunter Alberini (2.0 IP) and
Casey Hintz (1.0); the duo combined to hold the Cougars scoreless on just two hits over the final third of the game. Alberini (1-0) earned his first win of the year, while Hintz picked up his first save.
Starting pitcher
Smith Bailey delivered the Wildcats five innings of quality work, holding the Cougars to just three runs (two earned) on four hits while striking out five. The freshman tossed 101 pitches but did not factor into the decision.
White led the way for Arizona offensively, collecting three hits, all of which went for extra bases. The Tucson native raised his season batting average to .325, the second-best mark on the team.
