WACO, Texas- In its Big 12 Conference tournament debut, No. 11 Arizona Men's Tennis defeated No. 18 UCF 4-1 Sunday evening to claim the Big 12 Championship title, tacking on yet another accolade for the program under head coach
Clancy Shields.
After taking down Texas Tech and No. 16 Baylor, the Wildcats prepared for their championship match against the team that handed them two of their four losses on the season.
Sunday's match kicked off with gritty doubles action as the Cats and Knights battled for the early lead. On court two,
Colton Smith and
Alexander Rozin were first to finish with a 6-3 win over Yassine Dlimi and Emilio Sanchez. After
Casper Christensen and
Filip Gustafsson dropped the No. 3 match 5-7, the deciding match came down to No. 62
Jay Friend and
Eric Padgham on court one as they went point for point in a tiebreak. The duo ultimately fell 6-7(5) to No. 61 Liam Branger and Paul Colin and the Knights claimed the doubles point.
Now down 0-1, Arizona lined up for singles play with four wins needed to secure the title. First to finish and level the score was the fifth-ranked Friend on court two with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Branger. Giving the Cats the lead was Christensen playing in the sixth position, winning 6-3, 6-3 over Nicolas Oliveira. Shortly after, the fourth-ranked Smith claimed a 6-3, 6-3 win over No. 82 Dlimi, setting up Arizona for the clinch.
Two Wildcats, Gustafsson and Rozin, hit match-point status on courts four and five, respectively, before Rozin served it out to a 6-3, 6-3 win over Santiago Giamichelle and Arizona claimed the title.
The win marked Arizona's second conference tournament title in program history, and the first in the Big 12.
