TUCSON, Ariz. — Arizona catcher
Adonys Guzman has been selected to the Buster Posey Award Midseason Watchlist, the Wichita Sports Commission announced.
Guzman is one of 56 Division I catchers to earn a spot on the midseason watch list. The award has been presented annually since 2000 to the nation's most outstanding catcher; it was previously known as the Johnny Bench Award until renaming it after the famous Florida State and San Francisco Giants catcher, Buster Posey, in 2019.
Through 37 games, Guzman has posted a .319 batting average (44-for-138) with 28 runs scored, eight doubles, four home runs, and 27 RBI, all of which are career-high marks. In addition to his contributions at the plate, Guzman has started 33 games behind the plate and posted an impressive 4.08 catcher's ERA. The junior backstop has thrown out 11 would-be base stealers and registered a .991 fielding percentage on a team-high 346 total chances.
Prior to Guzman, the most recent Wildcat catcher to earn recognition from the Buster Posey Award was Daniel Susac, who was a semifinalist as a freshman in 2021 and watch list selection in 2022.
Guzman and the Wildcats return to action on Wednesday night at Hi Corbett Field as they play host to the UT Arlington Mavericks. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. MST.
