Arizona Women’s Basketball Welcomes UC San Diego Transfer Sumayah Sugapong

TUCSON, Ariz. — Arizona Women's Basketball head coach Becky Burke announced the signing of Sumayah Sugapong, the 2025 Big West Tournament Most Valuable Player and standout guard from UC San Diego, on Monday.

Sugapong played a pivotal role in leading UC San Diego to its first-ever NCAA Division I Tournament appearance, averaging 19.0 points across three games to guide the Tritons to the 2025 Big West Championship. She collected 14 rebounds, eight steals and six assists during the tournament, including a career-high 29-point performance in the quarterfinals against Cal Poly and a dramatic game-winning shot to upset top-seeded Hawai'i in the semifinals — a play that ranked No. 3 on ESPN's SportsCenter Top 10.

The San Diego native finished her sophomore season as an All-Big West First Team selection and earned Big West Player of the Week honors four times. She averaged 14.0 points per game over her two-year career at UC San Diego, starting every game as a freshman while leading the Tritons in scoring, assists, and steals.

As a freshman in 2023-24, Sugapong was named Big West Freshman of the Year and earned All-Big West Honorable Mention and All-Freshman Team accolades. She scored in double figures in 23 games and produced six 20-point performances during her first collegiate season.

Prior to college, Sugapong was a standout at La Jolla Country Day School, where she helped her team capture two CIF championships and a MaxPreps National Championship. She also trained internationally, participating in a FIBA Asia Cup training camp in the Philippines.
