Bringing together leaders from both creative and technical industries, the discussion highlighted the broad range of professional opportunities available to student-athletes after graduation.

Lessons in Communication and Storytelling

Panelists working in media and communications emphasized the importance of clear storytelling, adaptability, and authentic relationship-building. They underscored how skills gained on the court and in the classroom, such as confidence, preparation, and composure under pressure, can translate into successful careers in broadcasting, journalism, and digital content.

Mitch Zak, executive director of external communications at the University of Arizona, encouraged student-athletes to channel the traits they've developed through sports into their future careers: "I just wanted them to really harness that competitiveness, that work ethic, and point it in a direction that is their passion in life. And I know that when they do that, there's nobody that can beat them. They'll be successful in whatever they choose to pursue."

Innovation and Problem-Solving in Engineering and Design

Panelists from the fields of engineering and design encouraged student-athletes to view themselves as innovators and problem-solvers. Whether in architecture or engineering, they emphasized that persistence, teamwork, and critical thinking are essential for tackling complex challenges.

Dr. Ricardo Valerdi, department head of systems and industrial engineering at the University of Arizona, drew parallels between athletics and professional success: "Being coachable and being persistent, anytime you can transfer those qualities from your sport to a job or an internship, that's going to put you ahead of the game."

Preparing Wildcats for Life Beyond Sports

For student-athletes, the luncheon provided an opportunity not only to hear career advice but also to envision how their unique skills can serve them in diverse industries. The panelists' stories reinforced the idea that the discipline, leadership, and adaptability gained through athletics are powerful assets in any professional arena.
