TUCSON, Ariz. — Arizona earned its first Big 12 win of the season Tuesday night at McKale Center, knocking off BYU 75–72 in front of a crowd of 6,504. The victory marked the first Big 12 win at Arizona for head coach Becky Burke as the Wildcats improved to 1–3 in conference play.
The Wildcats placed five players in double figures and closed the game with a strong fourth-quarter surge, outscoring the Cougars 24–15 over the final 10 minutes.
Nora Francois led Arizona with a season-high 21 points on 9-of-12 shooting, adding a career-high five assists and five steals. Sumayah Sugapong followed with a season-best 18 points, going a perfect 9-of-9 at the free-throw line while recording three steals.
Mickayla Perdue and Tanyuel Welch each scored 13 points, with Welch also posting a career-high 14 rebounds. Noelani Cornfield recorded another double-double with 10 points and 10 assists before fouling out late in the fourth quarter.
Arizona trailed 57–51 entering the final period before mounting its comeback behind defensive pressure and efficient free-throw shooting. The Wildcats went 11-of-12 from the line in the fourth quarter and finished the night shooting a season-high 90.9 percent (30-of-33) at the stripe.
BYU was led by Delaney Gibb with 21 points, while Marya Hudgins added 17. The Cougars shot 36 percent from three-point range but were held to 15 points in the final quarter.
With the win, Arizona improves to 10–5 overall and 1–3 in Big 12 play. The Cats will continue at home with UCF on Saturday, Jan. 10 at 2 p.m.
