LAS VEGAS - The University of Arizona baseball team fell to Oregon, 7–2, Friday night in the Live Like Lou Las Vegas College Baseball Classic at Las Vegas Ballpark.
The Wildcats finished with five hits, highlighted by a three-hit performance from Nate Novitske, marking his first multi-hit performance of the season. Caleb Danzeisen and Carson McEntire each added a hit for the Wildcats, while Maddox Mihalakis and Andrew Cain both reached base twice in the game.
Oregon opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first, taking a 1-0 lead. The Ducks extended their lead in the second inning, scoring three runs to take 4-0 advantage.
Arizona responded in the top of the fourth, as Mathis Meurant put a ball in play that Oregon had trouble fielding, allowing Novitske and Cain to score on the play.
Oregon tacked on three more runs in the fifth inning to extend their lead to 7-2.
Arizona's pitching staff settled in late, as Maclain Roberts delivered an outstanding relief performance down the stretch, throwing 2.2 scoreless innings and recording four strikeouts.
The Wildcats were unable to produce any more runs after the Ducks took a five-run lead, as they went on to drop the opening contest of the three-game tournament.
Arizona will look to bounce back in its next matchup of the tournament, as they are slated to face Vanderbilt on Saturday at 5 p.m. (MST).
