Wildcats Rally from Early Deficit, Fall 7-6 in Extras at Utah

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - The University of Arizona baseball team rallied from an early 4-0 deficit, forced extra innings, and took a lead in the 10th, but they ultimately fell to Utah 7-6 on Saturday.

The Wildcats (7-11, 1-1) recorded 12 hits and six walks, while Utah (10-6, 1-1) tallied eight hits and drew three walks.

Maddox Mihalakis, Roman Meyers, Nate Novitske and Jackson Forbes each recorded two hits. Andrew Cain and Cash Brennan added one hit and two walks apiece.

Smith Bailey started on the mound and threw 5.1 innings, allowing five runs, four of which were earned, on five hits and one walk. The Wildcats received an outstanding relief performance from Maclain Roberts, who tossed a season-high 3.1 innings, allowing just one hit while striking out three and not permitting a run.

Utah started off strong in the contest, taking a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.

Arizona responded in the second, as Meyers walked to open the half inning. After a flyout and a fielder's choice, Forbes stepped up to the plate with two outs and a runner on first base. Forbes singled to right field, sending Carson McEntire to third. Brennan was up next and he delivered in impressive fashion, singling back up the middle to score McEntire. Novitske then ripped a single through the right side of the field, scoring both Forbes and Brennan to make it a 4-3 game.

Bailey settled in and retired the next nine batters he faced as the game moved into the fifth inning.

The Utes scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly, extending their lead to 5-3.

The Wildcats battled back, and tacked on a run in the seventh. After two strikeouts to begin the inning, Tony Lira singled to right field in the 10th pitch of the at-bat. Cain drew a walk to put two runners on with two outs, and Maddox Mihalakis came through with a single to score Lira.

Roberts shut down the Utes offense, and the game entered the ninth inning with the score remaining 5-4.

Arizona opened the inning with a flyout before Cain walked for the second time in the game. TJ Adams entered to pinch run, and the next at-bat resulted in a groundout, but Adams advanced to second on the play. Roman Meyers came to the plate with the Cats down to their final out. Facing a 2-2 count, Meyers delivered a clutch single to score Adams and tie the game at 5-5.

Roberts retired three of four batters in the bottom half of the frame and the game went to extra innings.

The Wildcats started the 10th inning with a strikeout, and Forbes was up next. Forbes swung at the first pitch he saw and launched a 410-foot solo shot to right field, giving Arizona its first lead of the game.

Utah responded in the bottom half of the frame by scoring two runs, as they earned the 7-6 victory over Arizona.

Arizona and Utah will play the decisive third game of the series on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. (MST).
