LEADING OFF
-
Arizona lost the most recent meeting between the two programs, as GCU earned a 5-2 victory in Phoenix last year (5/6/25). The Wildcats won the last contest in Tucson against the Lopes, a 14-4 run-rule victory (4/15/25).
NOVITSKE NAMED MVP
Redshirt Freshman Nate Novitske had an outstanding weekend at the Live Like Lou Las Vegas College Baseball Classic, earning Tournament MVP honors at the conclusion of the event. Novitske went 9-15 at the plate throughout the weekend, recording three hits in all three of Arizona's games. After Novitske's sensational weekend, he now ranks first on the team in batting average (.419), on-base percentage (.455), OPS (.971), tied for first in hits (13), and second in slugging percentage (.516), and RBI (5). Novitske has recorded at least one hit in seven of the eight games that he has played in this season, and he will aim to stay hot at the plate on Tuesday night.
BULLPEN MAKING AN IMPACT
Despite losing 2025 NCBWA Stopper of the Year, Tony Pluta, to injury before the start of the season, Arizona has had a multitude of pitchers step up and make a significant impact out of the bullpen. Senior relief pitcher Patrick Morris has been outstanding for the Wildcats this season. Morris, a transfer from Western Kentucky, has allowed just one run across 9.1 innings of work, while limiting opposing hitters to an average of .229. Matthew Martinez has also been highly impressive for Arizona this season. Martinez made his debut in the season opener against Stanford, pitching three innings and allowing just one hit and zero runs, while striking out seven batters. He followed that performance up with another stellar outing on Tuesday night against Omaha. The senior pitched 2.2 innings and did not allow a single hit, while striking out three batters. In total this season, Martinez has appeared in four games, throwing 7.0 innings and posting an ERA of 2.57, while recording 12 strikeouts and limiting opposing hitters to a .126 average. Fellow senior Patrick Morris has also been tremendous out of the bullpen for Arizona. Sophomore Mason Russell has made three appearances this season, tossing 4.0 innings and allowing just two hits and one run, while recording six strikeouts. Junior Maclain Roberts has made two appearances recently and has been tremendous. He made his Arizona debut on February 20 against UConn and pitched 1.2 innings while striking out all five batters that he faced. Roberts entered the game in relief against Oregon this past Friday and tossed 2.2 scoreless innings, limiting Oregon to just one hit over that stretch and striking out five batters.
FRESHMEN SHOWING OUT
Arizona has had four different freshmen start at least six games apiece the season, and they have continued to make a notable impact. Redshirt freshman Tony Lira has started all 11 games for the Wildcats and has been effective both offensively and defensively to start the season. True freshman Caleb Danzeisen has started eight of the past nine games for Arizona, and he was just named to Live Like Lou Las Vegas CBC All-Tournament team for his stellar play this past weekend. Danzeisen is batting .292 with an on-base percentage of .452, both of which rank second on the team. Fellow true freshman Cash Brennan, the younger brother of current UCLA starting right-fielder Payton Brennan, started six of the past seven games for the Wildcats and has been impressive in the field and at the plate. Nate Novitske has been exceptional, particularly over the weekend where he collected nine hits in 14 at-bats in Las Vegas.
