TUCSON, Ariz. — No. 2 Arizona clinched the Big 12 regular-season title Monday night, pulling away in the second half for a 73-57 victory over No. 6 Iowa State on senior night inside McKale Center at ALKEME Arena. It is the 41st conference championship in program history, with 32 of those being regular season titles. It is the third regular season conference championship in five years under head coach Tommy Lloyd and the fifth when including conference tournaments.
The Wildcats (28-2, 15-2 Big 12) used a balanced scoring effort, defensive pressure and dominance on the glass to secure the conference crown in their second season in the league. Arizona led for 34 minutes, 49 seconds and put the game out of reach with a decisive surge midway through the second half.
Senior Jaden Bradley scored 17 points to lead Arizona, converting 9 of 10 free throws and adding four rebounds and three steals. Motiejus Krivas provided a steady interior presence with 13 points on 3-of-4 shooting and a perfect 6-for-6 performance at the line. Senior Tobe Awaka recorded a double-double with 10 points and 15 rebounds, anchoring a Wildcats effort that finished with a 40-33 advantage on the boards.
Arizona carried a 37-25 lead into halftime after holding Iowa State to 27.3% shooting in the opening 20 minutes. The Cyclones struggled from long range, hitting just 4 of 20 3-point attempts in the first half and finishing 7 of 30 from beyond the arc.
Iowa State (24-6, 11-6) briefly cut into the deficit early in the second half, but Arizona responded with an 11-0 run to extend the margin to 21 with 2:59 remaining. The Wildcats shot 54.5% from the field after halftime and 45.8% for the game.
Brayden Burries added 11 points and six rebounds, while senior Anthony Dell'Orso and Dwayne Aristode combined for 16 points off the bench. Arizona's reserves outscored Iowa State's 28-17, and the Wildcats held a 17-9 edge in fast-break points.
Defensively, Arizona forced 16 turnovers and limited Iowa State to 29.2% shooting overall. Tamin Lipsey led the Cyclones with 17 points but needed 15 shots to get there. Joshua Jefferson added 12 points despite shooting 2 of 17 from the field.
Arizona also capitalized at the free-throw line, converting 23 of 26 attempts. The Wildcats outscored Iowa State 24-16 in the paint and 10-5 on second-chance opportunities.
When the final horn sounded, the home crowd rose to celebrate a milestone moment. In their second Big 12 campaign, the Wildcats left no doubt, securing the program's first Big 12 regular-season championship with another composed, physical performance on their home floor.
Arizona will take the court one last time in the regular season on Saturday, March 7th, in Boulder, against Colorado, at 9 p.m. MST. This game will be aired live on ESPN2.Â
