BOULDER, Colo. - Arizona closed its regular season with history on multiple fronts Saturday night, using a dominant second half to pull away from Colorado for an 89–79 win at the CU Events Center. The victory gives the Wildcats 29 regular season wins for the first time in program history, capping a 29–2 (16–2 Big 12) campaign.
Freshman guard
Brayden Burries delivered his biggest performance yet, scoring a season-high 31 points on 9-of-16 shooting while adding seven rebounds and five steals. Burries became the second Arizona freshman to post a 30-point game this season, joining
Koa Peat. With that feat, Arizona stands as the only team in the nation with two freshmen who have scored 30 points in a game this year.
The Wildcats needed Burries' surge after trailing 38–36 at halftime. Colorado led by as many as 11 in the first half, the Wildcats largest deficit in Big 12 play and second biggest of the season.
The Wildcats shot 70.4% from the field in the second half, including 19-for-27 overall and 4-of-5 from 3-point range. Their 53-point second half flipped the game, turning a tight matchup into Arizona's 12th double-digit conference road win of the season.
Freshman forward
Koa Peat added 25 points, hitting 12 of 15 shots while controlling the interior alongside
Motiejus Krivas and
Tobe Awaka. As a team, Arizona dominated points in the paint, 54–26, and held a 37–32 rebounding advantage.
Colorado's Isaiah Johnson scored 28 points to keep the Buffs close, but Arizona's defensive pressure forced 16 turnovers and turned them into 13 fast-break points. Burries alone scored multiple run-out baskets during a 22–10 Wildcat surge midway through the second half that gave Arizona the separation it needed.
Arizona also showed its depth, with
Ivan Kharchenkov scoring 10 points and Awaka contributing eight off the bench. The Wildcats recorded 22 assists on 33 made field goals and committed only nine turnovers.
Arizona will be the No. 1 seed in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Men's Basketball Tournament next week in Kansas City. The Wildcats will open play Thursday at 12 p.m. MST at T-Mobile Center, against either Utah, UCF or Cincinnati.
