Arizona Drops Series Opener to Texas Tech, 9-5

TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona baseball team left 13 runners stranded in a 9-5 loss to Texas Tech on Friday night in the first game of the weekend series against the Red Raiders.

The Wildcats (7-14, 1-3) recorded 10 hits and eight walks, while Texas Tech (14-7, 3-1) had 16 hits and three walks.

All nine starters for Arizona reached base at least once, with six players reaching base at least twice, as the Wildcats left 13 runners stranded.

Caleb Danzeisen maintained his stellar stretch at the plate, going 2-3 with two walks, two runs scored and an RBI. Tony Lira also had two hits, while drawing one walk and recording one RBI. Andrew Cain was 2-4 with a double and a walk, as Arizona had three players reach base at least three times.

Owen Kramkowski started on the mound and had a solid outing, tossing 5.2 innings and allowing four runs, three of which were earned.

Maclain Roberts was charged with the loss, while Texas Tech pitcher Jorden Espinoza recorded the victory.

Kramkowski had an exceptional start to the contest, as he retired the first six batters he faced; however, Texas Tech got going offensively in the top of the third. After three straight singles loaded the bases, Kramkowski struck out a batter to get one out. A sacrifice fly plated the first run of the game for the Red Raiders and a single scored a second run. Texas Tech scored a third run on an error, before a groundout ended the half inning with the Red Raiders leading 3-0.

The Wildcats responded quickly, scoring two runs in the bottom half of the frame. Nate Novitske reached base on an error with one out, and Danzeisen followed with a walk to put two runners on. Lira then singled through the left side of the infield to load the bases with one out. Maddox Mihalakis stepped up and delivered in impressive fashion, lacing a single through the right side of the infield to score two runs and trim Texas Tech's lead down to 3-2.

Kramkowski retired the side in the top of the fourth, and Arizona returned to the plate. Carson McEntire opened the inning with a leadoff single and stole second base. After a flyout, McEntire advanced to third on a groundout. With two down, Danzeisen came through with a critical single to score McEntire and tie the game. After Danzeisen advanced to second base on a wild pitch, Lira slashed his second hit of the night, a single up the middle that scored Danzeisen and gave the Wildcats their first lead of the game.

Texas Tech got one run back in the top of the fifth to tie the contest once again. In the bottom half of the inning, Jackson Forbes led off with a single. Beau Sylvester followed with a single of his own and Carson McEntire walked to load the bases. Gavin Triezenberg hit into a fielder's choice; but, Forbes was able to score on the play, as Arizona retook the lead.

Both teams went scoreless in the sixth frame, as Arizona maintained a 5-4 advantage entering the seventh frame.

Texas Tech scored three runs in the top of the seventh to take back the lead. The Red Raiders tacked on two more runs in the ninth to make it a 9-5 advantage, and Arizona was unable to score again, as they fell in the first of the three-game series.

Arizona and Texas Tech continue the series Saturday at 6:00 p.m. at Hi Corbett Field.
