No. 11 Arizona Drops Game One to Arizona State

TUCSON, Ariz. – No. 11 Arizona fell in the opening game of the series, 16-5, in five innings to Arizona State on Friday night.
 
The Wildcats tallied four hits but allowed 15 hits to the Sun Devils in game one of the series.
 
ASU took an early 8-0 lead after the first two innings. The Sun Devils struck first with four runs in the first inning on a solo home run and a three-run home run. In the second inning, ASU used a grand slam to extend their lead.
 
In the top of the third, ASU plated three more runs to take an 11-0 lead over the Wildcats. A fielder's choice sacrifice bunt brought the first run across and the other two runs came home on a single and a double.
 
Arizona got on the board in the bottom of the third on an RBI fielder's choice from Sereniti Trice.
 
The Sun Devils added two more runs to their total to make it 13-1 in the fourth on an RBI fielder's choice and a wild pitch.
 
The Wildcats scored four in the bottom of the fourth to cut into ASU's lead. A fielding error by the Sun Devils allowed Arizona to score two runs and Addison Duke drove in a pair with a double to left field.
 
ASU hit three solo home runs in the top of the fifth to take a 16-5 lead and Arizona couldn't comeback from the deficit.
 
In the circle, Holder picked up the loss to fall to 7-3 after tossing 2.2 total innings and allowing eight runs on six hits. Jenae Berry entered in the third and faced six batters but allowed three runs before Sarah Wright entered. Wright pitched two innings and allowed five runs on five hits.

No. 11 Arizona will look to even the series against Arizona State on Saturday, March 21 at 6 p.m. MST at Hillenbrand Stadium.
