Wildcats Battle, Fall to #13 West Virginia, 7-4

TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona baseball team dropped a 7-4 decision to #13 West Virginia on Tuesday night at Hi Corbett Field.

The Wildcats (9-19, 2-7) recorded seven hits and four walks, while West Virginia scored seven runs on five hits and drew 10 walks.

Evan Brandt took the loss for Arizona, while Carson Estridge earned the win and Reese Bassinger secured the save for the Mountaineers.

Carson McEntire paced the Wildcats offensively, going 2-for-4 with a home run, a double, and three RBI.

On the mound, Jack Lafflam made the start and delivered 2.0 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit. Matthew Martinez was dominant in relief, tossing 2.1 scoreless innings with one hit allowed, no walks, and six strikeouts. Arizona's pitching staff matched a season-high with 16 strikeouts throughout the game.

Arizona struck first in the bottom of the second inning when McEntire launched a two-run home run to left field to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead.

West Virginia responded with two runs in the third to even the score, then extended its lead with a three-run fourth inning to move ahead 5-2. The Mountaineers added two more runs in the fifth to push their lead to 7-2.

The Wildcats began to chip away in the sixth. After three consecutive singles loaded the bases with one out, Jackson Forbes scored on a wild pitch to cut into the deficit.

McEntire delivered again in the eighth, driving an RBI double off the left-field wall to bring Arizona within three.

Arizona was unable to complete the comeback as West Virginia closed out the 7-4 win.

The Wildcats return to Hi Corbett Field on Thursday at 6 p.m. to open a three-game series against #25 Arizona State.
