TUCSON, Ariz. - Smith Bailey delivered a superb outing, tossing 6.0 scoreless innings of one-hit ball while striking out a career-high 15; however, Arizona surrendered three runs in the seventh and eight in the eighth, falling 11-1 to Kansas State on Saturday night.
The Wildcats (14-24, 5-12) were limited to four hits, while Kansas State (25-14, 9-8) totaled nine.
Patrick Morris was charged with the loss for Arizona, while Lincoln Sheffield earned the victory on the mound for Kansas State.
Bailey was nothing short of extraordinary, as he recorded the most strikeouts by an Arizona pitcher in over 12 years. He allowed just three base runners across six innings, surrendering one hit, while walking one and hitting a batter.
Offensively, Carson McEntire produced the lone run for the Wildcats, blasting his eighth home run of the season. Beau Sylvester extended his hitting streak to nine games with a 2-for-4 performance, while Andrew Cain added a hit.
Bailey was locked in from the start, striking out three batters in the first inning, before striking out six consecutive Kansas State hitters in the second and third frames.
McEntire opened the scoring in the bottom of the fifth, launching a 406-foot solo shot to left field to put Arizona ahead 1-0. Bailey struck out the side again in the top of the sixth, marking the end of his day.
Kansas State responded in the seventh with a three-run home run to take the lead, before adding eight runs in the eighth to break the game open.
Arizona returns to Hi Corbett Field on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. (MST) for the series finale against Kansas State.
