TUCSON, Ariz. - Arizona fell to BYU Friday night at Hi Corbett Field, 5-1, in game two of the series against the Cougars (21-20, 10-10).
The Wildcats (16-25, 7-13) showed flashes early and broke through in the fifth inning, but were limited to four hits on the night and couldn't string together enough offense against BYU starter Garrison Sumner. Arizona left seven runners on base, and finished 0-for-4 on the night with runners in scoring position.
Owen Kramkowski turned in a steady outing, tossing 5.1 innings and allowing three runs on seven hits, while striking out four, as he kept the game within reach. Despite a tough defensive night, Arizona stayed within striking distance throughout the contest.
BYU scored four combined runs from the fifth through seventh frames to create separation, while its pitching staff combined to hold the Wildcats in check the rest of the way.
Arizona and BYU will return to Hi Corbett Field on Saturday at Noon for the series finale.
