Wildcats Rally Late, Fall in Walk-Off at Grand Canyon

PHOENIX, Ariz. – Arizona scored five unanswered runs across the final three innings to take the lead, but Grand Canyon answered with a five-run ninth to walk it off, handing the Wildcats a 9-8 loss on Tuesday night at Brazell Field.

The Wildcats (16-27, 7-14) totaled 11 hits, while Grand Canyon (16-26) recorded 18.

Arizona showed resilience throughout, chipping away after falling behind early. Grand Canyon struck for three runs in the second inning, capitalizing on a pair of wild pitches and an Arizona error to take a 3-0 lead.

The Wildcats responded in the fourth, as Caleb Danzeisen and Nate Novitske opened the inning with back-to-back singles before Tony Lira drove in a run with a base hit through the left side to cut the deficit to 3-1.

Arizona bullpen arms Corey Kling and Luc Fladda steadied the game across the middle innings, combining for 4.1 scoreless frames to keep the Wildcats within striking distance.

The Wildcats broke through again in the seventh, plating two runs to even the score. After a walk and a single put runners on, Mathis Meurant swiped second before Arizona took advantage of a Grand Canyon error, allowing both runners to score and tie the game at 3-3.

Arizona seized momentum in the eighth inning. Tony Lira and Andrew Cain worked walks before Beau Sylvester delivered a single to load the bases. Carson McEntire then came through with the biggest swing of the night, ripping a bases-clearing triple to left field to give the Wildcats a 6-3 lead.

Grand Canyon answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning, but Arizona extended its advantage in the ninth. Lira delivered again with an RBI triple before Cain added a sacrifice fly to push the Wildcats in front, 8-4.

The Lopes mounted a final rally in the ninth, beginning with a two-run home run before stringing together multiple extra-base hits to cut into the deficit. With two outs, Grand Canyon completed the comeback with a walk-off two-run single.

Tony Lira led the Wildcats offensively, going 3-for-4 with a double, triple, two RBIs, and two runs scored. McEntire drove in three, while Sylvester and Meurant each recorded two hits.

Garrett Hicks (3-2) was charged with the loss.

Arizona returns to action on Friday, as they are slated to travel to face No. 11 Kansas in a three-game series.
