WACO, Texas (May 29) - Jeremy Sanders threw six innings of relief, allowing just one hit as Eastern Illinois beat Arizona 13-4 in the loser's bracket of the NCAA Regional in Waco.
The Panther playoff win, the first in Eastern Illinois history as a Div. I team, sends them into a 7 p.m. game tonight against the loser of the 3 p.m. contest between Baylor and Minesota.
Arizona's season ends at 22-23 while EIU stays alive with an identical mark.
Sanders (10-1) came on in the fourth after Panther starter Matt Gage had yielded five hits and four runs.
Eastern Illinois took a 2-0 lead in the first and added another run in the second before Arizona pulled within one with a pair of runs in the third. The Wildcats took the lead at 4-3 in the top of the fourth, but EIU responded with a pair in the bottom of that frame.
The tournament's fourth seeded team then went on a tear, scoring in every succeeding inning. Arizona had an uncharacteristic defensive day with five errors.
Catcher Brian Bridgewater led the Panther attack, going 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored. Shortstop David Mikes notched three RBI as well on a 2-for-4 day at the plate. Designated hitter Chris Martin reached base three times and scored three runs.
Eric Torres led the Widcats with a 2-for-4 hitting day. Catcher Dennis Anderson also went 2-for-4 with a a pair of RBI.
