TUCSON - In a ceremony in the Hall of Champions on Wednesday, State Farm recognized 18 University of Arizona student-athletes as part of the State Farm Territorial Cup Series Good Neighbor Team. This is the second installment of the Good Neighbor Team which is an annual scholarship program to recognize the accomplishments of student-athletes at the University of Arizona and Arizona State University who exemplify the true spirit of the collegiate athlete.
A total of 18 representatives from each school, who competed in the State Farm Territorial Cup Series rivalry, were honored for their achievements in the classroom, on the field and in their community. This award seeks to recognize those student-athletes who truly exemplify the idea of being a Good Neighbor. A sum of $20,000 is being donated to the Wildcat Club by State Farm on behalf of the student-athletes who were recognized.
From the fall sports, Rachel Rhoades (volleyball), Kristi Strother (soccer), Hanna Henson (women's cross country), James Eichberger (men's cross country) and Jake Fischer (football) were recognized.
From the winter sports, Alex Jacobson (men's basketball), Rebecca Cardenas (gymnastics), Alyssa Anderson (women's swimming and diving), Brigetta Barrett (women's indoor track and field), Austen Thompson (men's swimming and diving) and Reiko Thomas (women's basketball) earned accolades.
From the spring sports, Jessica Spigner (softball), Matt Troupe (baseball), Phil Bagdade (men's golf), Susan Mc Rann (women's tennis), Andre Vidaller (men's tennis) Nikki Koller (women's golf), Edgar Rivera-Morales (men's outdoor track and field) and Alex Weatherly (women's outdoor track and field) picked up honors.
The State Farm Territorial Cup Series is the yearlong rivalry competition between the University of Arizona and Arizona State University. Points are awarded to the winning team at the conclusion of each 18 rivalry sports competitions or series. The university with the most points at the end of the academic year will earn the right to retain and display the State Farm Territorial Cup Series Trophy for the next year, in addition to holding state bragging rights. Currently, UA leads ASU 7.5-4.5 in its attempt to defend their title.
