Tucson, Ariz. – The University of Arizona Wildcat men’s and women’s track and field teams are set to host the Tucson Elite Classic on Thursday, May 21 and Saturday, May 23. The meet, which is strictly for throwers and jumpers, brings some of the best professional track and field athletes in the world to Arizona’s Roy P. Drachman Stadium. On Thursday and Saturday, the competition starts at 4 p.m. MST. All marks by collegiate athletes do not count towards qualifying for the NCAA West Preliminaries. For the Wildcats on Thursday, Pac-12 Champion Gerhard de Beer will throw the discus at 4 p.m. MST with decathlon Pac-12 Champion Pau Tonnesen. Tonnesen will also high jump with former Wildcat and NCAA Champion Nick Ross at 5 p.m. The women’s high jump featuring senior Shakayla McEaddy and sophomore Lisanne Hagens is set to begin at 7 p.m. Senior Daniel Whitham will throw the hammer at 5:45 p.m. At 8:30 p.m., Tonnesen and sophomore Aaron Castle will throw the shot put.
de Beer will throw the discus again at 4 p.m. on Saturday. Whitham will also throw the hammer at 5:45 p.m. Castle is also set to compete in the shot put at 8:30 p.m. again as well.
Volunteer assistant coach Jill Camarena-Williams, an American record holder in the event, will throw the shot put on both days at 7:30 p.m. Former Wildcat All-American Taylor Bush will compete in the women’s hammer throw at 4 p.m. on both days of competition.
