STANFORD, Calif. (AP) - Michael Sgroi kicked three field goals, and Chris
Lewis threw 12 yards to Alex Smith for the game's only touchdown as Stanford
defeated Arizona 16-6 Saturday.
The Cardinal (2-4, 1-2 Pac-10) took the lead for good in the first quarter
when Sgroi kicked a 45-yard field goal.
Jason Johnson passed for 244 yards to lead Arizona (3-4, 0-3), but he threw
three interceptions and was sacked six times.
After Sgroi's field goal, Arizona began moving up the field, until Stanley
Wilson intercepted one of Johnson's passes and ran 35 yards to the Wildcats
17-yard line.
On the second play of possession, Lewis fired to ball to Smith, who pulled
the ball down from over his head and fell backward into the end zone for a 9-0
lead.
Arizona's Bobby Wade was the single biggest threat to Stanford, catching
eight passes for 121 yards. He also returning two kickoffs for 58 yards and
brought a punt back 64 yards.
The Wildcats' only scores came on two field goals by Bobby Gill, from 25 and
23 yards. Arizona didn't score in the second half.

field to the Arizona 7, but Matter's pass was picked off in the end zone by
Lance Briggs early in the fourth quarter.
Johnson drove the Wildcats to the Stanford 35, but his pass was intercepted
at the 13 by Oshiomogho Atogwe. Matter then led Stanford to the Arizona 4 yard
line, but again the Cardinal couldn't score a touchdown. They settled for a
21-yarder by Sgroi.
Kerry Carter led Stanford's ground game with 98 yards on 27 carries. In the
third quarter, he carried for six consecutive plays to get into Wildcat
territory.
The drive led the Cardinal to the 8-yard line before the possession went
awry. Lewis recovered his own fumble for a loss of 2 yards. On the next play,
he lofted the ball into the end zone, but it slipped through Teyo Johnson's
hands.
Stanford had to settle for a 27-yard field goal from Sgroi to go ahead 13-6.
