CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Arizona baseball team dropped its second
straight Pac-10 series of the season with a 5-0 shutout loss to Oregon State
in Goss Stadium at Coleman Field on Saturday. The defeat drops Arizona to
21-12 overall and 2-4 in the Pac-10. Saturday's loss was the fourth shutout
loss of the season for the Wildcats.
The Beavers opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, scoring
three runs off Arizona's Marc Kaiser. OSU's Andy Jarvis hit his third home
run of the season, a two run shot, in the first before Friday's hero, Tom
Creighton, blasted his second home run in as many days to extend the lead to
4-0 in the third. OSU added one more in the bottom of the seventh on a
throwing error by Ken Riley on the back end of a double steal.
Kaiser (5-2), the Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week, was tagged with his
second shutout loss of the season. The right-hander surrendered five runs on
seven hits on Saturday. He struck out two and walked one. His first loss of
the season came in Arizona's 6-0 loss at Long Beach State on March 10.
Arizona has been one hit, four hit and three hit twice in its four
shutout losses this season.
The Wildcats, who are 19-4 at home this season, return to Sancet
Field next weekend for a Pac-10 match-up with College World Series runner-up
Stanford Friday-Saturday. First pitch for the series opener on Friday is
scheduled for 7 p.m.
