Box Score
TUCSON, Ariz.- Arizona starter Luis Cortez didn't make it out of the first inning and the Wildcat offense stranded nine runners in scoring position as Washington State evened the three game Pac-10 series at a game apiece with a 10-4 win over UA on Kindall Field at Sancet Stadium on Saturday.
Cortez (2-3) was forced from the game with two outs in the first after surrendering four runs on just one hit. The right-hander walked four batters in the inning, including one for a RBI, before giving up a three-run double to Zach McAngus and getting lifted for reliever Pat Lawler.
The Cougars continued to pour it on against the UA bullpen, scoring a run in the fourth, two in the sixth and three in the seventh to win going away.
The Wildcats had numerous opportunities on offense to cut into the WSU lead, but left runners on base in seven of the nine innings, including five at third base. Arizona finished with 11 hits in the game, six that went for extra bases, but got two or more hits in an inning just twice.
WSU's Bryce Chamberlin (5-0) remained perfect on the season with his fifth win. The right-hander gave up four runs, three earned, on seven hits in six innings. He struck out eight and walked two.
Reliever Garrett Alwert picked up the save with three scoreless innings in relief of Chamberlin. Alwert finished with three punchouts and no walks.
Offensively, McAgnus led all players with a 2 for 5, five-RBI day at the plate. Jason Freeman finished 4 for 5 with a RBI and run scored for the victorious Cougars.
The lack of production at the plate for Arizona wasted a 3 for 5 effort by sophomore Trevor Crowe.
The two schools will play for the series victory on Sunday at 12 pm MST.
