TUCSON, Ariz.- The Arizona men's golf shot par (360) in the second round of the Gifford Classic at CordeValle and dropped to ninth place in the fourteen team tournament.
Junior Jonathan Khan used his lowest round of the season, 67 (-5), to climb from 22nd to 6th place in the event. The five under round tied a 66 (-5) that Khan shot his freshman year as his lowest score in relation to par. The Tucson native is five strokes off the lead with one round to play.
Also making his way into the top 20 was Tarquin MacManus. The junior, who was also tied for 22nd after the first round, shot a 70 (-2), and moved into a tie for 13th. MacManus is at three under for the tournament. MacManus and Khan each have a top 20 finish credited to his name this season, and they will try to add a second with a solid finish in round three.
The three top teams in the tournament are only separated by one stroke. Stanford took over the lead in the second round with its 350 (-10). The Cardinal, at 16 under, lead the event by only one stroke over Oklahoma State and first round leader Duke. UCLA is in fourth and Charlotte in fifth.
Peter Uihlein of Oklahoma State took the lead individually following his tournament-low round of 65 (-7). At eleven under par, Uihlein holds a two stroke lead over Justin Bardgett of Colorado. Stanford's Sihwan Kim is in third.
The third and final round will tee off tomorrow morning at 8:30 PST with live stats available at www.golfstat.com. The Gifford Classic is contested at the CordeValle Resort, a par-72, 7,169-yard course.
