Simon, Cats Pitch Second Straight Shutout

March 20, 2011

Arizona 7, San Francisco 0 (Box Score)

TUCSON, Ariz. - Kyle Simon pitched seven innings of scoreless baseball and Jett Bandy hit two doubles and scored a pair of runs as No. 11 Arizona shut out visiting San Francisco, 7-0, on Sunday evening at Kindall Field/Sancet Stadium.

Simon improved to 5-0 on the season with another steady performance as he scattered eight hits, struck out three and issued no walks in his 7.0 innings on the mound. Matt Chaffee pitched perfect eighth and ninth innings, respectively, with three strikeouts to complete the shutout.

Arizona (15-5) turned in a second straight shutout on the heels of a 14-0 romp on Saturday night. It marked the first time since March 17 and 19 a season ago that the Wildcats registered shutouts in consecutive games.

San Francisco (9-10) found itself behind early as the Wildcats struck for two runs in the home half of the first inning. Robert Refsnyder delivered a sacrifice fly and Johnny Field tallied his first of two RBI on the evening with a single to left field to spot the early lead.

The score remained 2-0 into the fifth inning when Arizona added three runs. Bandy hit a one0out double and scored on Refsnyder's RBI single to center field. Field followed with an RBI triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Seth Mejias-Brean.

For good measure, the Wildcats added two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. Bryce Ortega singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Joey Rickard. Cole Frenzel singled home Ortega, before Bandy ripped his second double of the game to allow Frenzel to score from first.

In all, the Wildcats collected 15 hits on the night against the Dons' pitching staff. Starter Kyle Zimmer was charged with the loss after giving up five runs in 5.2 innings of work.

The two teams will conclude the three-game series on Monday at noon (MST/PDT) at Kindall Field/Sancet Stadium.
