Bruins Blank Cats To Even Series

April 16, 2011

UCLA 4, Arizona 0 (Box Score)

LOS ANGELES - Trevor Bauer struck out 13 batters and tossed a complete game shutout as No. 23 UCLA evened up a three-game series against No. 20 Arizona in a 4-0 decision on Saturday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Bauer improved to 7-1 on the season with his victory on Saturday. The right-hander allowed just six base runners on the day, including four hits, one walk and one hit batter. His 13 strikeouts were the most for an opposing pitcher against Arizona on the season.

Kyle Simon suffered the loss for the Wildcats after giving up three runs - one earned - in 5.2 innings on the mound. He scattered eight hits and walked two.

UCLA (18-12, 8-4 Pac-10) was staked to a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning after a pair of uneared runs scored. Chris Giovinazzo reached on a fielding error by shortstop Alex Mejia, and Cody Keefer followed with a single to left field. One out later, Steve Rodriguez singled to right field to drive home Giovinazzo, and Keefer scored on a squeeze bunt by Pat Valaika.

An inning later, UCLA tacked on a third run. Beau Amaral led off with a single and stole second to get in scoring position. Cody Regis drove in Amaral with a single to right field to push the lead to 3-0.

Arizona (23-12, 5-6 Pac-10) squandered a scoring opportunity in the top of the sixth. Cole Frenzel doubled with one out and moved to third on Jett Bandy's single to left field. However, Josh Garcia and Robert Refsnyder struck out swinging to end the inning, stranding the two base runners.

The Wildcats were unable to register a hit or put a runner on base thereafter. Bauer finished the game by retiring 11 straight hitters, including five by strikeout. The Wildcats left five base runners on base over the first six frames.

The Bruins added a fourth run in the bottom of the eighth. Reliever Bryce Bandilla issued a one-out walk to Keefer, before Rodriguez delivered a two-out single to put runners at the corners. Keefer scored on a wild pitch to set the score at its final, 4-0.

Arizona's four hits came from Frenzel, Bandy and Mejia. Frenzel was 2-for-4 at the plate and extended his season-long streak of reaching base to 35 straight games.

The two clubs will conclude the three-game series on Sunday. The rubber match is set for 1 p.m. (PDT) at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

RADIO NOTE: The series finale on Sunday, April 17, will be broadcast nationally on Sirius XM College SportsNation. The Arizona Radio Network broadcast featuring play-by-play description by Brian Jeffries will be aired on SIRIUS 122 and XM 143.
