TUCSON, Ariz. - San Diego State put together another solid round to increase its lead at the 2011 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Arizona Regional in Tucson, Ariz.
Each of the second-seeded Aztecs countable scores were under par as SDSU added four shots to its lead in the second round. For the second day in a row, SDSU carded the low team tally of the round and now leads the 14-team field by five shots at 12-under 556.
"Overall I thought we played really solid," said SDSU head coach Ryan Donovan. "We started out rough. We were five over par on the first four holes and we slipped to eighth place. The guys dug deep and never quit. I'm proud of how the guys stayed composed and finished strong."
Led by Johan Carlsson and J.J. Spaun, who each tallied two-under 69s, SDSU was one of just two teams to break 280 on the day. The Aztecs seek its seventh team title of the season and first NCAA regional crown heading into tomorrow's final round.
Host Arizona carded its second-lowest team round of the season (280/-4) and sits in second place at 561 (-7). UA's seven-under score through 36 holes is the team's second best total of the season.
Texas A&M (563) and Pepperdine (564) round out the top-four places.
Oregon State's Alex Moore moved into the individual lead Friday after firing a two-under 69. The round included six birdies, but a double-bogey on the par-4 ninth hole - his last of the day - dropped his lead to one stroke over Matt Hansen of UC Davis.
"I played okay today," said Moore. "My short game kept me in it. I played well, except for the last hole, but I think I have a chance tomorrow. I just tried to make as many birdies as I could."
Senior Jonathan Khan led the way today for Arizona, notching a three-under 68 that moved him into a tie for eighth place at 139 (-3). For Khan, it was his best round since March 21, when he carded a 67 to open the National Invitational Tournament - an event he won on this same Tucson National course.
Teammates Juan Pablo Hernandez and Tarquin MacManus also played well for the Wildcats. Hernandez posted a two-under 69, equaling his low round of the season, to move into a tie for 12th place at 140 (-2), while MacManus is tied for fourth place at 138 after carding an even-par 71.
Erik Oja is in a tie for 35th place at three-over 145, while Stefan Cox is tied for 53rd place at six-over 148, to round out the UA participants.
The 54-hole 2011 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Arizona Regional concludes Saturday at Omni Tucson National Golf Resort, a par-71, 7,199-yard layout. Final round tee times begin at 7:30 a.m. PDT.
The top five teams and one individual advance to the 114th NCAA Championships, May 31-June 5, at Karsten Creek Golf Course in Stillwater, Okla.
