TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona men's golf team stands in 17th place after opening play Tuesday at the 2011 NCAA Men's Golf Championships in Stillwater, Okla.
The Wildcats tallied a 302 (+14) total in the first round and is in 17the place after the first 18 holes. Three UA players are within four shots of par, as the 30-team, 156-man field challenging conditions at Karsten Creek Golf Course. Only two teams and 18 individuals managed to break par on the day.
Georgia Tech leads the field at five-under 283, three shots ahead of UCLA and five ahead of Alabama. Texas A&M rounds out the top five places at one-over 289.
Georgia Tech's James White leads all individuals at five-under 67.
Arizona seniors Tarquin MacManus and Jonathan Khan led the way for Wildcats, as each carded a one-over 73 to tie for 34th place. The duo had nine birdies on the day between them.
Teammate Juan Pablo Hernandez carded a four-over 76 in his first NCAA Championship round - a round that included birdies on two of his last three holes. The sophomore currently is tied for 75th place.
Erik Oja is in a tie for 128th place at eight-over 80, while Stefan Cox is tied for 143rd place at 10-over 82, to round out the UA contingent.
The 2011 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships continues through Sunday at Karsten Creek Golf Course, a par-72, 7,416-yard layout.
