TUCSON - The University of Arizona Wildcat No. 14 men's and No. 8 women's track and field teams competed in the combined events portion of the Pac-12 Championships. The competition is being held at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
Sophomore Keegan Cooke and freshman Harrison Ivie competed in the decathlon for Arizona. Ivie finished with 3,321 points after five events, good for 14th place. In the 100-meter dash, Ivie took 13th with a time of 11.53. Cooke came in 18th, clocking a time of 11.59. Cooke tweaked his hamstring in the 100 meters and dropped out of the competition. In the long jump, Ivie had a mark of 20-3, good for 14th place in the event. In the shot put, Ivie earned a sixth-place finish with a toss of 40-6.25 (12.35m). In the high jump, Ivie had a personal-best clearance of 6-2 (1.88m), good for a tie in eighth place. Ivie clocked a personal-best time of 54.31 in the 400-meter run, good for 17th place.
"For the guys, we're going to need a really good second day to get in the top-8," assistant coach Sheldon Blockburger said. "We're going to fight till the end and see what happens. Keegan (Cooke) hurt his hamstring with about 10 yards left in the 100-meter dash. He has a really good attitude about it and he's already counting down the days until next year's Pac-12 Championships."
Senior Liana Fuentes and sophomore Amber Passalaqua competed in the heptathlon for the Wildcats. Passalaqua sits in seventh place with 3,120 points after four events. Fuentes is in eighth place, scoring 3,075 points on day one. In the 100-meter hurdles, Fuentes clocked a time of 14.79, good for ninth place. Passalaqua came in 10th place with a time of 14.92. In the high jump, Passalaqua tied for fourth place, clearing 5-6 (1.68m). Fuentes tied for ninth with a clearance of 5-2.5 (1.59m). In the women's shot put, Fuentes earned a third-place finish with a toss of 39-10 (12.14m). Passalaqua had a personal-best toss of 36-4.75 (11.09m), good for seventh place. In the 200-meter dash, Passalaqua clocked a time of 25.55, good for eighth place. Fuentes earned tenth-place finish, posting a time of 25.84.
"We're plodding along and hoping for a big second day," Blockburger said. "Amber (Passalaqua) and Liana (Fuentes) did alright, I thought the hurdles could've been a little better but all-in-all we're not too far off our predicitions. I still think we have a shot to finish in the top-5."
Brianne Theisen (Oregon) leads the heptathlon with 3,758 points after the first day. Dakotah Keys (Oregon) leads the decathlon after the first day with 3,969 points.
