TUCSON, Ariz. -
No. 29 Arizona women's tennis defended its home-court winning streak in its defeat of NAU, 6-1, at Robson Tennis Center on Friday.
With the win, the Wildcats extended their home record to 14-consecutive wins, dating back to 2011.
"I'm pleased with today's match," Arizona head coach Vicky Maes said. "We competed hard and got the job done."
The match began with junior Akilah James (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and sophomore Susan Mc Rann (Dublin, Ireland) earning the first win in doubles play at the No. 3 spot. Freshman Shayne Austin (Oak Park, Calif.) and junior Lacey Smyth (Oceanside, California) clinched the doubles point at the No. 2 spot by defeating NAU's Malia Wahinepio and Ghizelene Doballah, 8-5.
In singles play, James continued her success by defeating Malia Wahinepio at the No. 4 spot and securing a second point for the Wildcats.
At No. 1 singles, Smyth defeated Hannah Stone, 6-1, 6-0, to set up fellow junior Kim Stubbe (Mol, Belgium) to seal the win for Arizona.
Playing as the No. 2, Stubbe took the first the two sets, 6-1, 6-0, from Hannah Stone to clinch Arizona's first win of the spring campaign. Sophomore Laura Oldham (Sheffield, England) also recorded a singles win in the No. 3 spot.
At the No. 6 spot, freshman Inge Hendrikx (Zundert, The Netherlands) made her Arizona spring debut and earned her first win by defeating Nicole Perez, 6-3, 6-2. James and Austin were also making their spring debut for the Wildcats.
"There were definitely some jitters in our newbies, though, and that affected our play," Maes said. "We need to grow from this experience and come out stronger tomorrow."
The Wildcats are scheduled to take on UC Davis tomorrow, Jan. 19 at noon at Robson Tennis Center.
