TUCSON, Ariz. -
No. 29 Arizona women's tennis defeated UC Davis, 6-1, to record their second win of the season at the Robson Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.
“The team did an excellent job today,” Arizona head coach Vicky Maes said. “We played really hard and never gave UC Davis any chances.”
Arizona earned the first point of the day by winning all three doubles matches. First, Arizona junior Lacey Smyth (Oceanside, Calif.) and freshman Shayne Austin (Oak Park, Calif.) rolled past Edles and Pham, 8-3, at the No. 2 spot.
Playing at the No. 3 spot, Arizona juniors Susan Mc Rann (Dublin, Ireland) and Akilah James (Brooklyn, N.Y.) secured the doubles point by defeating Curry and Koehly, 8-2.
After losing their doubles match against NAU on Friday, UA junior Kim Stubbe (Mol, Belgium) and freshman Inge Hendrikx (Zundert, The Netherlands) bounced back and earned their first doubles win of the year.
“We made some improvements in our doubles,” Maes said. “But it was mostly our singles play that left me impressed.”
Five UA players won their singles matches through straight sets.
As the No. 1, Smyth defeated Megan Heneghan, 6-2, 6-2, giving the Wildcats a 2-0 lead. James gave the Cats another point by beating Edles, 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 4 position.
A few minutes later, Arizona sophomore Laura Oldham secured the victory for Arizona by earning her second singles win of the season over Ellie Edles, 6-0, 6-1.
Juniors Susan Mc Rann also recorded wins in singles play.
“We showed up more focused and more hungry and played very few loose points,” Maes said. “It is this kind of effort that will determine how we grow as a team match after match.”
Coming into today's match, Arizona rode a 14-consecutive winning streak at home and with the win, the Wildcats have now won 15-straight.
Arizona will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 26 to face No. 41 Minnesota in the ITA Kick-off Weekend in College Station, Texas at 10 a.m.
