Feb. 1, 2013

TUCSON, Ariz. -

No. 28 Arizona (4-1) defeated No. 58 Sacramento State (1-0), 7-0, on Friday afternoon at the Robson Tennis Center.

“This was a great win for our girls,” Arizona head coach Vicky Maes said. “We really needed a solid team win going into tomorrow.”

Friday's win marked the 16th-consecutive home victory for Arizona and the 3rd-consecutive home win this season.

After failing to earn the doubles point in both matches this past weekend, the Wildcats bounced back by taking all three matches in doubles play.

UA juniors Akilah James (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Susan Mc Rann (Dublin, Ireland) earned their fifth straight doubles victory at the No. 3 spot over Angerer and Ryan-Bovey,8-2.

Arizona junior Lacey Smyth (Oceanside, Calif.) and freshman Shayne Austin (Oak Park, Calif.) gave the Wildcats the early point lead by defeating Jennifer Nguyen and Katherine Knoebl, 8-2, at the No. 2 spot.

At the No. 1 spot, UA junior Kim Stubbe (Mol, Belgium) and freshman Inge Hendrikx (Zundert, Netherlands) defeated Delgado and Lohscheidt, 8-6.

In their last match against Texas A&M, Arizona failed to win a set in singles play. Against Sacramento State, Arizona won every singles match in straight sets.

Smyth gave the Wildcats a two point advantage after defeating Rebeca Delgado, 6-2, 6-0, at the No. 1 spot.

With the 2-0 lead, Stubbe swept Sophie Lohscheidt, 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 2 spot to bring the Wildcats a point closer for their fourth win.

Sophomore Laura Oldham (Sheffield, England) clinched the match when she defeated Katherine Knoebl at No. 3 spot.

Mc Rann and Austin also earned singles wins.

“Everyone got it done on every single court,” Maes said. “Both singles and doubles and this momentum will be huge going up against Texas Tech.”
