FORT WOTH, Texas -
No. 30 Arizona (6-4) dropped their match against No. 28 TCU (6-1), 4-3, on Saturday at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth, Texas.
Arizona fell in the doubles point and headed into singles with a 1-0 deficit.
“What got us in trouble right away was our doubles play,” Arizona head coach Vicky Maes said. “We just didn't execute and TCU was able to take advantage of that. As a result, we got behind early and needed to battle for four singles wins.”
At the No. 5 spot in singles, UA freshman Shayne Austin (Oak Parks, Calif.) won her third-consecutive singles match by sweeping Monika Sirilova, 6-0, 6-0. Austin gave the Wildcats its first point of the day and tied the score, 1-1.
Arizona saw its first lead of the day when UA junior Lacey Smyth (Oceanside, Calif.) upset No. 50 Stefanie Tan, 6-3, 6-3, at the No. 1 spot. Smyth's singles record improved to 9-1 this season at the No. 1 and her win was the second-consecutive victory over a top 50 singles player.
Arizona fell behind 3-2 after dropping the next two singles matches.
At the No. 3 spot, UA sophomore Laura Oldham (Sheffield, England) dropped her first set against No. 115 Simona Parajova, 6-3. Oldham would come back to take the second set, 6-3, and the third, 7-5, to tie the match, 3-3.
The No. 6 spot would decide the winner of the match. UA freshman Inge Hendrikx (Zundert, The Netherlands) dropped the first set against Kelsey Sundaram, 6-3 but took the second set, 7-5. Sundaram would take the third set and give TCU their sixth win of the season.
“I give our girls a lot of credit for fighting back,” Maes said. “We certainly created opportunities and came up just a little short. I'm proud of my group for how they competed. We really have a lot of heart. We will learn from this and do better tomorrow.”
Arizona will face North Texas tomorrow at 12 p.m. CT.
