TUCSON, Ariz. -
No. 56 Arizona blanked Utah State, 7-0, and defeated Grand Canyon, 6-1, in Saturday's doubleheader at the Robson Tennis Center.
Arizona's record improved to 8-5 while Utah State fell to 2-3 and Grand Canyon dropped to 6-2.
"The team did a good job of competing today," Arizona head coach Vicky Maes said. "It was a little different playing two matches in a row and we knew we had to be fit to go hard for both. Utah State and Grand Canyon gave it their best effort. We had to be on our toes."
Match 1 Arizona 7 Utah State 0
Arizona swept the doubles round to earn the first point of the match.
UA coach Maes paired freshmen Shayne Austin (Oaks Park, Calif.) and Inge Hendrikx (Zundert, The Netherlands) for the first time this season at the No. 2 spot. Austin and Hendrikx cruised past Voytsekhovich and Tukuafu, 8-1, to give UA the advantage to win the doubles point.
UA juniors Lacey Smyth (Oceanside, Calif.) and Kim Stubbe (Mol, Belgium) partnered in doubles for the first time this season at the No. 1 spot. Smyth and Stubbe defeated Davis and West to put the Wildcats ahead 1-0.
Arizona juniors Susan Mc Rann (Dublin, Ireland) and Akilah James (Brooklyn, N.Y.) improved to 10-2 at the No. 3 doubles spot to give UA the sweep in the doubles.
Arizona won all its singles matches in straight sets to clinch the first match of Saturday's doubleheader.
The Wildcats led Utah State, 2-0, after James won the first two sets, 6-1, 6-1, over Utah State's Julie Tukuafu at the No. 4 spot.
At the No. 6 spot, Hendrikx swept past Hillary Hays, 6-2, 6-2, to put the Wildcats ahead, 3-0.
Minutes later at the No. 2, Stubbe earned her seventh singles victory this season over Jaci West, 6-4, 6-0, as Arizona clinched the match to pick up its seventh win of the season.
Austin gave Arizona its fifth singles win of the match as she won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, over Kallie Sperry at the No. 5 spot.
Smyth picked up her eleventh victory at the No. 1 singles spot over McKenizie Davis, 6-2, 6-2.
Sophomore Laura Oldham concluded the match with a 6-2, 6-1, win over Kristina Voytsekhovich to give the Wildcats the 7-0 win over Utah State.
Match 2 Arizona 6 Grand Canyon 1
Arizona went into the singles round with a 1-0 lead over Grand Canyon after the Wildcats swept the doubles round for the second time of the day.
UA juniors Susan Mc Rann (Dublin, Ireland) and Akilah James (Brooklyn, N.Y.) recorded the first doubles win of the match at the No. 3 spot over Van de Velde and Knopf, 8-4.

UA junior Kim Stubbe (Mol, Belgium) extended the Arizona lead to 2-0 after she defeated Justine Majan, 6-2, 6-1, at the No. 2 spot.
Arizona's lead extended to 3-0 after Austin won in straight sets against Jordan Bridges, 6-1, 6-0, at the No. 5 spot.
UA junior Lacey Smyth (Oceanside, Calif.) shut out Priscilla Annoual in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, to help the Wildcats clinch their eighth victory of the season.
"Our away schedule this month is grueling," Maes said. "It was important to come out and get some wins this weekend. Going into conference play next week, we strongly needed to gain momentum. We need to start getting some wins on the road now too. It will take a complete team effort, but I am confident we can start pulling some of these close ones our way."
