Cats Start Weekend with Strong Victory

TUCSON, Ariz. The Arizona women's tennis team picked up right where they left off last week with a 4-0 victory over San Jose State Saturday at the Robson Tennis Center.

Starting the match off by picking up the doubles point, senior Lacey Smyth and sophomore Shayne Austin defeated Marie Klocker and Rey Gaelle 6-1. Following right after was the duo of senior Akilah James and freshman Lauren Marker taking their match, 6-0.

Senior Kim Stubbe and sophomore Inge Hendrikx did not finish their match, but were leading 4-3 when the doubles point was clinched.

“The girls did a good job today of closing out matches,” said Head Coach Vicky Maes. “We were on in doubles 1 and 2 and got that point fairly quickly.”

In singles play, Marker continued her impressive performance by winning her match in the No. 5 spot in straight sets claiming the second point of the day for the Cats.

Laura Oldham earned the third point of the day for the Cats by taking her match 6-0, 6-1.

In the No. 1 spot, Smyth continued her notable start to the season by earning a 6-2, 6-3 victory. This clinched the victory for the Cats.

James, Stubbe, and Austin did not finish their matches.

“In singles we got on the board fast as well,” said Maes. “Where we struggled a tiny bit was towards the end of our second sets on our top courts. We need to be able to maintain focus and close out matches before we play ourselves into a potentially tight situation. But the team handled it well and certainly lots can be learned from these types of experiences.”

The Wildcats will be back in action for two matches on Sunday. Starting at 9 a.m, the Cats will take on New Mexico State. They will then take on San Francisco at 1 p.m. Sunday. Both matches will take place at the Robson Tennis Center.
