Junior Lacey Smyth earned her first win over a ranked player of the season, but Arizona women's tennis (7-1) fell to No. 19 Texas Tech (6-1), 6-1 on Friday at McLoed Tennis Center.
Smyth defeated No. 115 Kenna Kilgo, 6-3, 6-3, but it was the only Wildcat win of the day.
“This was not a great day for our girls,” Head Coach Vicky Maes said. “We didn't compete the way we had to, to beat a team like Tech. I felt going in that we matched up well, but we didn't get off to a good start.”
Freshman Lauren Marker and Austin pushed a third set tiebreaker, but both lost at the No. 4 and 5 spots, respectively.
In doubles play, Smyth and sophomore Shayne Austin battled No. 37 Adams and Kilgo at the No. 1 spot, but fell, 8-4.
“My hope is that we can take this experience and learn from it,” Maes said. “We will have a chance to rebound against Georgia State tomorrow.”
The Wildcats will face Georgia State on Saturday, Feb. 15 at noon in Lubbock.
