Cats Move to 7-0 with Defeat of Sacramento State

TUCSON, Ariz. The Arizona women's tennis team remains undefeated after defeating Sacramento State 4-0 Saturday afternoon at the Robson Tennis Center.

The Cats made a statement early taking all three doubles matches, 6-1, 6-4, 6-2.

In singles action Arizona battled to earn each singles point.

“This wasn't our best performance,” said Head Coach Vicky Maes. “We did well in the doubles, but had a bit of a meltdown in singles.”

Freshman Lauren Marker continued to step up in the No. 3 role just as she did Friday. She earned the second point for the Cats by winning, 6-2, 6-1.

Senior Kim Stubbe grabbed the third point for the Cats shortly after by defeating Alina Soltanici, 6-1, 6-0.

Sacramento State challenged the Cats to earn their final point.

“We got the quick 3-0 lead, but then we kind of sputtered to a near stop,” said Maes.

Senior Lacey Smyth took charge and claimed the match for the Cats by winning in the tiebreaker set, 6-1, 4-6, 10-6.

“Fortunately, Lacey kept her cool to win the super tiebreaker,” said Maes. “But with this format things can turn quickly and I certainly did not feel comfortable for a while. Credit to Sacramento State for battling, but we need to do better mentally if we want to continue our winning ways.”

The Cats clinched and junior Laura Oldham and sophomores Shayne Austin and Inge Hendrikx did not finish their matches.

The Wildcats will take their first spring road trip to Lubbock, Texas to take on Texas Tech on Friday, February 14 and Georgia Tech on Saturday, February 15. Both matches will take place at Texas Tech.
