No. 29 Arizona Falls to No. 5 Stanford in Palo Alto

No. 29 Arizona women's tennis (14-2, 3-1) fell to No. 5 Stanford (12-0, 4-0), 7-0 on Friday afternoon in Palo Alto, Calif.

"We battled Stanford well," said Head Coach Vicky Maes. "But we didn't convert on the opportunities we had. Teams like this don't give you much, so when you are in a position to win games, you need to be committed to close on it."

In doubles play, the Cardinal took matches at the No. 1 and 3 spots to take the point.  Stanford's #10 Ahn and Zhao defeated senior Lacey Smyth and sophomore Shayne Austin, 8-1 at No. 1, while Doyle and Hardebeck took their match over seniors Akilah James and Susan Mc Rann at the No. 3 spot, 8-2.

In singles play, all six of Stanford's ranked players took matches at their respective positions.

Austin fell to #42 Ellen Tsay at the No. 5 spot, junior Laura Oldham fell to #37 Caroline Doyle at No. 6 and James fell to #27 Davidson at No. 4.

Smyth dropped her match to #2 Kristie Ahn at the No. 1 spot, while Marker fell to #28 Carol Zhao at No. 3.

Senior Kim Stubbe fought back to win the second set in her match against #39 Krista Hardebeck, but dropped in the tiebreaker at the No. 2 spot.

"Stanford wasn't just going to roll over," said Maes. "It's a good reminder of what we still lack in order to beat top teams. We hang, but we don't convert. We need to believe we can do better and give Cal a more complete battle."

The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, March 29 at No. 16 California in Berkeley, Calif. at noon.
