Arizona Concludes Rice Invitational

HOUSTON--- The University of Arizona men's tennis team concluded play at the Rice Invitational on a high note, Sunday at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium.

Freshmen David Meshayev (Azor, Israel), Junior's Naoki Takeda (Osaka, Japan), and Jason Jaruvang (Phoenix, Ariz.), along side senior Carlos Bermudez (Tucson, Ariz.) competed exceptionally well against reputable players from around the nation in what marked the first action of the season for the Wildcats.

“Some of what we have been working on at home showed up as the weekend progressed,” said assistant men's tennis coach Aaron Spencer. “Overall it was a great opening weekend nonetheless. We were able to see the things we need to work on as we continue to move forward this season.”

“A lot of credit goes to the staff at Rice. They did an incredible job dealing with the constant weather issues at the start of the weekend.”

Jaruvang and Meshayev both made their Arizona debuts this weekend, while Jaruvang was able to make a splash early, advancing all the way to the quarterfinals. The junior transfer earned a dominating 6-1, 7-6 (3) victory over TU's Ian Sneddon before eventually dropping a tough three-set affair to LU's Nikita Li.

Takeda also made a nice run in the consolation portion of the bracket, as he advanced to the consolation bracket's semifinal round, before falling to UTSA's Yannick Junger.

Jaruvang and Bermudez also boasted a nice weekend on the doubles circuit, advancing to the event's second round, before falling to the eventual doubles champion duo of Warren and Malik, 6-2.

Remaining doubles, and consolations, were not played to completion due to inclement weather.

The Cats will be back in action at the San Diego State Invitational in San Diego, California, on Oct. 3-5th.
