TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Arizona men's golf team finished seventh at the Arizona Intercollegiate on Tuesday at Sewailo Golf Club. The Wildcats posted a 13-over 865 behind an even-par tournament from freshman George Cunningham, who tied for 13th. Arizona St. won the team championship at 12-under and ASU's Max Rottluff took medalist honors after finishing at 10-under.
"Our team felt great prepping for this week and we positioned ourselves well to make a move today," said head coach Jim Anderson. "We came out a little too aggressive to some pins and then started compounding mistakes by making big numbers. The team is disappointed, but we have to remember we have six events left and our job now is to prepare for the John Burns."
Cunningham put together rounds of two over, four under and two over to finish up at even par. Senior Brenden Redfern used a two-over 73 on Tuesday to tie for 21st on the individual leaderboard, finishing with a 3-over 216. Freshman Max Donohue also shot two over on Tuesday and finished in a tie for 27th at five over. Junior Kolton Lapa and senior Alex McMahon rounded out Arizona's five, finishing tied for 42nd and tied for 54th respectively.
"We can take some positives from this tournament like George's strong play and consistent play from Max," Anderson added. "George is beginning to break out now, so I know we will see more great play from him this semester."
Sophomore Jake Kreuz led the individuals competing for Arizona. He fired an even-par 71 in the final round to tie for 23rd at four over par. Senior Dylan Kornberg was the next best individual, finishing in a tie for 66th.
Next up, the men's golf team will travel to Lihue, Hawaii for the John Burns Invitational Feb. 18-20.
