TUCSON, Ariz.--- The Arizona Women's tennis team completed day two of the Wildcat Invitational at El Conquistador Country Club on Saturday after finishing 3-4 in singles play and going 4-2 in doubles competition.
Freshman Kinga Gartner and junior Samantha Czarniak took their first doubles match of the day against NAU's Hailey Rochin and Marta Lewandowska by a score of 8-7 before losing to the New Mexico doubles team of Sharon Coone and Andrea LeBlanc 8-4. Flight one also saw seniors Shayne Austin and Inge Hendrikx win their first match against New Mexico's Ruth Copas and Rachana Bhat by a score of 8-4. The seniors couldn't keep the momentum going however, as they fell to the Tulane team of Ipek Birol and Sade Atkinson 8-4.
Junior Devin Chypyha and freshman Camila Wesbrooks will be in the Doubles Flight-Two finals on Sunday after winning their two matches of the day, both by a score of 8-5. The first came against Marquette's Leonie Daems and Courtney Hebard and the second was against NAU's Jordan Denesik and Sara Brown.
“I think all three doubles teams did a great job of implementing a few things that we have asked them to do,” head coach Vicky Maes said. “They used more lobs and were much more creative. I thought that Sam (Czarniak) and Kinga pulled out a good win because even though they weren't playing their best, they still found a way to get the win. That's what you want to see in your players.”
Freshman Sophia Thomas remained undefeated in singles play after beating Utah State's Monika Van de Vondel by a score of 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, securing herself a spot in the Wildcat Draw's final match. Wesbrooks won her only solo match of the day (Red Draw) in two sets by a score of 6-1, 6-4 while Chypyha beat Tulane's Sofia Kurtz (6-3, 6-1) in the Blue Draw.
